This is one of the most corny love lines of any movie, and yet still sweet. Have you ever have a special song that had significant meaning for you and your loved one? I don’t mean necessarily that the words of the song applied to your relationship or anything, but maybe you just remember it being played at a special time, or you in some way connect it to your dating days. My husband and I had several, but there was always one particular song we claimed as ours. Every time I hear it now I am drawn back to a special date.
Nothing really important happened that evening, but still something stuck it in my head as a special occasion. My husband (who was then my boyfriend) had borrowed a friend’s four-wheeler and we took it out to a field to ride around. It grew dark out, and when we got tired of driving, we parked in the middle of the field and lay back to count the stars. Somehow, we got started singing our favorite songs together or just any old song that we both remembered the words to.
There was no marriage proposal or anything so memorable that evening—just a happy couple having a good time and enjoying each others company while singing silly songs. Still, during that date “our song” was chosen. Now, years later, when I hear it playing on the radio, I still remember with crystal clarity the details of that occasion and the feeling of our early relationship. This is why I think it’s good for couples to have a song. It’s not the song itself, but the shared sense of nostalgia it creates in you as a couple.
I think today many couples have outgrown the old fashioned idea; maybe it never even occurs to some people anymore. But in this age, where romance so often seems to fade beneath the light of day, it seems nice to recapture as much of it as we can in any silly little way. That’s why I’m a fan of scrap-booking, keep-saking, and especially choosing a special song. It can be anything—a song that sums up your relationship, or something humorous that has a secret significance to the two of you. The important thing is to choose one and to remember it. I know I remember mine.
