I WANT TO HOLD YOUR HAND

When the Beatle song was played on the US airwaves for the first time towards the end of 1963, no one knew it would mark a new epoch in the history of American music.

To some people, flamboyant and breath-taking romantic gestures are a second nature, while many of us rack our brains, trying to think of new ways of showing affection much to the exasperation of an expectant partner. There are times when every attempt to sweep the ground from under his or her feet just makes you look more of a klutz than usual. You unleash your imagination, let yourself be inspired, act on that inspiration in a no holds barred manner, and picturing already the breathless excitement of that someone special, that orgasmic pleasure…all you succeed in doing is to bring a bemused smile on the face of the recipient.

Then there are self-help books, guides that tell you how to keep the romance alive in your 25 year old, anything but romantic relationship. Shower her with gifts, take him out on a camping trip, plan a candle-light dinner with soft music playing in the background, cook like you’ve never cooked before. All calculated to induce a nervous breakdown in you, and a justifiably suspicious partner asking ‘are you having an affair with someone else?’ If, that is, you didn’t already chuck one of those after reading the first page, for the sake of your sanity and your relationship. (The people who wrote them are the first class of people of course, to whom it all comes naturally.)

Also there is your conscience gnawing at you, and the signs of romance all around, put there by evil gnomes who hide in invisible corners and laugh to see you writhe with guilt and pain. Finally there is the expectant partner, who miserably fails in trying to look non-expectant, adding to the burden you can almost no longer bear. But when you’ve decided to take the plunge, even though the waters are rather cold at this time of the year, just pause for a second. Hum the Beatles song and mentally bless each one of them a restful sojourn in heaven.

For all the songs that have been written about love, they have managed to capture the essence of romance in a single line. Just hold hands. Don’t mind the setting, or the time or the time of day, just when that person is most busy, reach out and hold their hand. There can be nothing more romantic. This is where the world ends.

And take a bow.
